An oil spill kills the herons of Prall's Island
1990
Prall's Island, Staten Island, New York
On New Year's Day 1990 an Exxon pipeline under the Arthur Kill split and released about 567,000 gallons of heating oil into an eleven mile slick. This uninhabited island was one of the busiest wading bird rookeries in the harbour, and roughly 700 birds died. Cleanup crews dug trenches to lift oil out of the sediment and stopped work when the herons returned to nest. A 1991 settlement put 11.5 million dollars into repairing the estuary.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
