A Texas financier bought Pacific Lumber in a junk-bond takeover in 1985 and tripled the cutting rate to service the debt, which is what set off a decade of protest. The state and federal governments eventually paid about $480 million for 7,500 acres containing the last unprotected old-growth groves. The company went bankrupt anyway in 2007.
