Great Esker Park holds the tallest esker in North America

A retreating glacier left this winding ridge of sand and gravel about 12,000 years ago, and at ninety feet it is the tallest esker on the continent. The Navy bought both banks of the Weymouth Back River in 1912 to buffer the ammunition depot across the water, which is the accident that kept the ridge from being built over. Weymouth took the land in 1965 and opened it as a park the year after. The marsh below the ridge runs backwards on an incoming tide.
