Garden of the Gods on the Shawnee hills
1939
Shawnee National Forest, Saline County, Illinois

Sandstone laid down three hundred million years ago, cut into camels and anvils and left standing on a ridge above the only part of Illinois the glaciers never flattened. The observation trail is a quarter of a mile of flagstone the Civilian Conservation Corps laid, and the view from it is not what anyone expects Illinois to look like.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
