Local historians started pushing to save the downtown in the 1970s, as the new airport turned the surrounding cotton and dairy land into runways and warehouses. The town joined the Texas Main Street program in 1984, passed a preservation ordinance in 1991 and got the commercial core listed on the National Register in 1992. The result is a block of restored storefronts about two miles from a major international airport.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
