Gooey butter cake, a mistake nobody fixed
1930
South St. Louis, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The story every bakery tells is that a German baker in the 1930s got the proportions wrong, used too much butter in a coffee cake batter, and sold the flat gluey result rather than throw it away. It is unverifiable and universally repeated. What is certain is that the real thing is a bakery product with a yeast base, not the cream cheese and cake mix version that spread everywhere else under the same name.
