Girls' High School, where Shirley Chisholm graduated
1886
475 Nostrand Avenue, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn's first public secondary school split in two here in 1886, the girls taking the new Victorian Gothic building on Nostrand Avenue with its mansard roof and bell tower. Shirley Chisholm finished in the class of 1942, two decades before she became the first Black woman elected to Congress. Lena Horne, Betty Smith and Roxie Roker went through the same doors.
