Born in Brooklyn to a Guyanese factory worker and a Barbadian seamstress, and sent to her grandmother in Barbados for seven years, which is where she said she got the diction. First Black woman elected to Congress, and in 1972 the first to run for a major party's presidential nomination: unbought and unbossed.
