Geneva Country Day School, the progressive school that started in a barn

William D. Bangs and his wife began tutoring their sick son and some of his friends in their own barn, and the class they called the Adventure School outgrew it. They hired Holabird and Roche, the firm behind a good deal of downtown Chicago, to build a school that looked like a home, and it opened in 1927. It ran twelve years as a progressive school before Depression enrollment closed it. The building was kept as the Geneva Memorial Community Center and went on the National Register in 1989.
