Gateway High School joined a boom suburb to a shrinking railroad town
1958
Monroeville, Pennsylvania
Monroeville and Pitcairn merged their school systems in 1955 and opened this building in September 1958 for about 900 students, dedicating it in November 1959. The two places were heading opposite ways. The turnpike interchange was covering Monroeville in new houses while Pitcairn was beginning to lose the Pennsylvania Railroad yard jobs it had been built around. They have shared a high school ever since, and enrolment now runs a little over 1,100.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
