Gary/Chicago International Airport, the third airport Chicago never used
1954
Gary, Indiana

The airfield opened in 1954 and has been pitched ever since as relief for O'Hare and Midway, sitting twenty five miles from the Loop. An interstate compact between Gary, Chicago and the state of Indiana created the authority that runs it. Scheduled passenger service has never held for long: boardings fell to 1,633 for the whole of 2009.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
