Fruit Cove is named by the minister who wrote Florida's orange manual

Theophilus Wilson Moore, a minister who had come down from North Carolina, bought a hundred acres on the east bank of the St Johns in 1873, planted orange trees along the river and Cunningham Creek, and gave the cove its name. He then wrote the Treatise and Hand-Book of Orange Culture in Florida, which a New York house carried through three editions in the early 1880s and which growers up and down the state worked from. The groves are long gone and the census now counts about 32,000 people living here.
