Freeman Booth builds a town around his cotton gin and syrup mill

Freeman Irby Booth put a cotton gin, a general store, a lumberyard and a syrup mill on part of Henry Jones's old Austin colony grant in the 1890s, and a settlement gathered around them. The post office opened in 1894 and a Baptist church followed two years later. Booth reached about 300 people by 1914, with a bank and telephone lines, then emptied out to roughly 40 by the end of the 1940s. Sixty people were counted here in 1990.
