Fort Clinch is given up without a shot
1862
Fernandina Beach, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Army began this pentagon of almost five million bricks in 1847 and never finished it. Confederate troops held the harbour and its blockade runners from 1861, then Robert E. Lee ordered the fort given up in March 1862 because rifled cannon had made masonry walls pointless, and Union forces moved in and ran the Georgia and Florida coast from it for the rest of the war. Civilian Conservation Corps crews rebuilt the place in the 1930s and the state bought 256 acres around it in 1935.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
