Fort Hawkins on the Creek frontier

Jefferson had a fort and trading post built on the bluff above the Ocmulgee to deal with the Creek Nation, whose land began at the river. It became the staging point for the campaigns that took that land, and the town of Macon grew up on the opposite bank once the treaties had done their work.
