Fort Ward, the best preserved of the forts that ringed Washington

The Union threw up a ring of forts around Washington after the first battle at Bull Run, and this was the fifth largest of them. Nearly all of it survives: between 90 and 95 percent of the earthen walls are still standing at their original height. After the war freed people settled on and around the site and built a community they called the Fort, which the city later cleared for a park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
