Fort Jefferson and the doctor who set Booth's leg
1865
Dry Tortugas, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Sixteen million bricks on a sand key seventy miles past Key West, built to command the Gulf and never finished or fully armed. It held the Lincoln conspirators, including Samuel Mudd, who had set John Wilkes Booth's broken leg. When yellow fever swept the garrison and the post surgeon died, Mudd took over the hospital and was pardoned for it. Getting there still means a boat or a seaplane.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
