Fort Fisher falls and the last port closes

An earthwork fort of sand and timber that absorbed shelling brick could not, and kept Wilmington open for the blockade runners feeding Lee's army long after every other Confederate port had closed. It fell in January 1865 to the largest amphibious assault in American history before the Second World War, nearly sixty warships and 9,000 troops. Lee had said its loss would mean he could not hold Richmond. It was, and he could not.
