The Battle of Belmont, Grant's first fight
1861
Belmont, Mississippi County, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Grant's first battle as a commander, fought across the river from the Confederate guns at Columbus. His men overran the camp, then stopped to loot it and were nearly cut off when reinforcements crossed from Kentucky, and he got them back onto the transports with the enemy close enough to fire into the boats. Both sides claimed it. What it actually did was teach Grant what his soldiers would and would not do.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
