Daniel Boone cut the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and built a stockade here, the second English settlement in Kentucky. Shawnee forces under Blackfish besieged it for eleven days in 1778, Boone had been captured and adopted by them, escaped, and got back in time to organise the defence, for which he was afterwards court-martialled for treason and acquitted.
