Fort Maurepas, the first capital of Louisiana
1699
Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Iberville · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Iberville built a stockade on this bay and made it the seat of French Louisiana, a colony that on paper ran from the Gulf to Canada, governed from a sandy point in Mississippi. The capital moved to Mobile, then Biloxi, then New Orleans, but the French claim to the whole interior starts here, and Mardi Gras came ashore with them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
