Flagler's Continental Hotel makes Atlantic Beach
1901
Atlantic Beach, Florida
Henry Flagler ran a branch of his Florida East Coast Railway up toward Mayport, put a depot on the dunes, and opened the Continental Hotel beside it on June 1, 1901. Five wooden storeys around a six storey rotunda held about 200 rooms, a 350 seat dining room and two of the area's first golf courses. Renamed the Atlantic Beach Hotel in 1913, it burned in 1919, but the town the hotel invented stayed and kept its own government.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
