First Unitarian Church of Oakland and its redwood arches
1891
Downtown Oakland, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The congregation traces back to a Presbyterian minister convicted of heresy in 1869 who left and took his followers with him. Walter J. Mathews designed the masonry Romanesque building dedicated in September 1891, a deliberate break from the wood frame Gothic churches California was building at the time. Its roof rides on first growth redwood arches cut from the Oakland hills, the widest spans west of the Rockies when they went up, and every material except the Boston stained glass came from inside the state. It is California Historical Landmark 896.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
