Fieldston, the private neighbourhood inside New York City
1909
Fieldston, Riverdale, Bronx, New York

Joseph Delafield bought this hilltop farm in 1829, and in 1909 his heirs laid the land out as a private residential park, the year after the subway reached Van Cortlandt Park. The engineer Albert Wheeler bent the streets to follow the contours rather than cutting a grid across them. The roads are still owned by the residents instead of the city, and the district was landmarked in 2006.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
