Fairmount Water Works
1815
Schuylkill River, Philadelphia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The first big-city water system in America, pumping from the Schuylkill in a Greek Revival pavilion so admired that Dickens toured it. Protecting the water led the city to buy the land upstream, which became Fairmount Park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
