Sag Harbor, the whaling port

A deep-water port that sent sixty ships to the Pacific after whales and was, for a while, a customs district to rival New York's, Washington signed its custom house into being. Melville names it in Moby-Dick. When the whales and then the oil ran out the town simply stopped, which is why its Greek Revival streets survived to be admired.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
