Followers of Henry George, who held that land value belongs to the community and everything else should go untaxed, bought a bluff on Mobile Bay to prove it worked. The corporation still owns much of the land and leases it out with the rent standing in for tax. It is the most successful surviving experiment of its kind in the country, and has been quietly running for over a century.
