The Tallahassee bus boycott
1956
Florida A&M University, Tallahassee
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Two students, Wilhelmina Jakes and Carrie Patterson, sat in the only free seats on a city bus, which were beside a white woman, and were arrested. A cross was burned at their house. The campus emptied the buses within days and kept them empty for months, running a car pool the city then prosecuted, the same fight Montgomery had picked six months earlier, in a town half the size.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
