Engel v. Vitale begins with a morning prayer in New Hyde Park
1962
New Hyde Park, New York
The Herricks school district here adopted a twenty two word prayer written by the New York Board of Regents and had teachers lead it every morning. A group of local parents sued, arguing the state had no business composing prayers for children of different faiths and none. In 1962 the Supreme Court agreed by six votes to one, holding that an official prayer breaks the establishment clause even when it names no denomination and pupils may sit it out.
