The American Legion put up this concrete cross by 1925 for forty nine men from Prince George's County killed in the First World War, with their names on a bronze tablet at the base. A state commission later took over its upkeep, and the American Humanist Association sued on the grounds that public money maintaining a cross breached the Establishment Clause. The Fourth Circuit agreed. The Supreme Court reversed it seven to two in June 2019.
