Emmanuel Baptist Church, the Standard Oil cathedral

Charles Pratt paid for it and Francis Kimball designed it in 1887, a Gothic Revival front in pale stone that neighbours called the Standard Oil church. Kimball's problem was that Baptists preach to a room rather than down a nave, so he grafted cathedral massing onto an auditorium plan. The congregation runs to a couple of thousand members and the building is on the National Register.
