The congregation broke off from Cambridge's First Baptist Church in 1844 and sold its first meeting house to the Congregationalists. Alexander Rice Esty designed the Gothic Revival replacement that went up on Harvard Street in 1869, out of local fieldstone and granite quarried a short way off in Somerville. It has been on the National Register since 1982.
