Vilano Beach and its vanished casino
1926
Vilano Beach, St. Johns County, Florida
Guests off Flagler's trains crossed the Tolomato River by ferry to use this sandbar as their beach, and the 1920s land boom platted it properly. August Heckscher put up a Mediterranean Revival casino here in 1926 with a saltwater pool 150 feet long and touring New York dance bands. High tides and 50 mile an hour winds on 28 August 1937 started pulling it apart, and the storms of 1938 and 1939 finished it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
