Eight thousand years of camps found under a Leetsdale industrial flat

The Pittsburgh District of the Army Corps of Engineers started digging a twelve acre riverside site here in 1999 and did not finish until 2003. Flood silt had sealed one patch of ground layer by layer, so crews worked down roughly twenty feet through camps that people had returned to for about eight thousand years, from the Middle Archaic into the Early Woodland. Above all of that sat the remains of a brick works the Harmonists ran in the 1800s. Nothing else on the upper Ohio in Pennsylvania has been excavated this carefully.
