Edith Wilson of Wytheville
1872
Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Born over a store on Main Street, Edith Bolling married a president and then, after Woodrow Wilson's stroke in 1919, decided which papers reached his bed and which did not for the last year and a half of his term. She called it her stewardship. Others have called it the closest the country came to an unelected executive. The rooms above the store are a museum, and she is the only first lady from Virginia's mountains.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
