Anna Jarvis held a service for her late mother in this church in 1908, campaigned until Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914, and then spent the rest of her life and most of her money trying to destroy what it became. She sued over the commercialisation, was arrested for disturbing the peace at a carnation sellers' convention, and died broke in a sanatorium. The church is preserved as a shrine.
