East St. Louis High School, the school in Savage Inequalities
1991
East St. Louis, Illinois
Jonathan Kozol put this school near the centre of Savage Inequalities in 1991, his account of what American school funding does to a district with almost no tax base to fund it. It is the only high school in East St. Louis and draws from Washington Park, much of Alorton and Centreville and pieces of half a dozen townships besides. Lincoln High School was folded into it in 1998.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
