East Jefferson General Hospital, built on a bond vote
1971
Metairie, Louisiana
The East Bank of Jefferson Parish filled with subdivisions faster than it gained hospital beds, so the parish council created a hospital service district and sent a bond issue to the voters, who passed it in November 1965. Officials broke ground on twenty acres of empty land off Houma Boulevard, and the hospital opened on Valentine's Day 1971 with 250 beds. It stayed a parish-owned nonprofit until LCMC Health acquired it in 2020.
