East Hills Shopping Center, killed by the mall down the road

East Hills opened in 1960 as an open-air centre built by the engineering firm Mellon-Stuart, anchored by a Joseph Horne department store, with G. C. Murphy, Kresge and a Thorofare supermarket alongside and its lanes named after presidents. It sat across the line where Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills and the city meet. When Monroeville Mall opened in 1969 with its own Horne's, the shoppers went there instead, and East Hills was largely empty by the late 1970s. It was demolished in 2001.
