Drake's well, where the oil industry starts

Edwin Drake was not a colonel and had no idea what he was doing, which is roughly why it worked: he was the first to drive an iron pipe down through the loose ground and drill inside it, and at sixty nine feet in August 1859 he found oil where everyone had been skimming it off creeks. Within a year the valley was a forest of derricks and the world had an oil industry. He never patented the drive pipe and died poor on a state pension.
