Texas drills its first wells over water at Goose Creek
1916
Goose Creek field, Baytown, Texas
Drillers found oil here in 1903 and got little out of it for over a decade. A 1916 gusher opened the field, and crews then worked out onto Tabbs Bay and Black Duck Bay on piers and platforms, the first drilling over water in Texas and only the second in the country. Production peaked near 8.9 million barrels in 1918. The boom built the town that became Baytown.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
