This strip of the west side runs from West 45th to West 85th between Lake Erie and what is now Interstate 90. Its commercial heart was Gordon Square, where a vaudeville house opened in 1911 and the Gordon Square Arcade went up in 1921 with the 1,400 seat Capitol Theatre inside it. The theatre reopened decades later and the surrounding blocks were rebuilt around it as an arts district.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
