DeSoto turns into one of the country's Black middle class suburbs

DeSoto was a cotton stop turned commuter town of a few hundred people, run on Jim Crow rules well into the 1960s. Black families began buying here in numbers through the 1980s, and the African American share of the city went from about 21 percent in 1990 to about 46 percent in 2000 and past two thirds by the 2020s. The same shift ran through Duncanville, Cedar Hill and Lancaster, and the Best Southwest became one of the best known Black middle class suburban areas in Texas.
