Delta Flight 191 hits a microburst at DFW and changes how airliners fly

On August 2, 1985 a Lockheed TriStar on approach to DFW flew into a thunderstorm microburst, struck the ground about a mile short of the runway, hit a car on the highway and broke apart against two water tanks. 137 people died, including the driver of the car. The airport had only anemometer based windshear alarms inside its fence line, which could not see what was on the approach path. The investigation drove the FAA to require onboard windshear detection and put terminal Doppler weather radar at airports across the country.
