A crash at Greater Southwest airport rewrites the rules on wake turbulence
1972

On May 30, 1972 a Delta DC-9 flying practice landings at Greater Southwest International ran into the wake of a much larger DC-10 that had gone in ahead of it, rolled and crashed, killing all four crew. The accident forced the FAA to set minimum separation distances behind heavy aircraft, a rule every controller still works to. Greater Southwest closed in 1974 when DFW opened just to the north, and its main runway now lies under Amon Carter Boulevard.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
