Decatur's first subdivision, and the woman architect who drew half of it

John Mason and Poleman Weekes bought this ground in 1907 and cut Decatur's first residential subdivision into it, ten blocks just west of Agnes Scott College. Many of the Craftsman houses came from Leila Ross Wilburn, who opened her practice in 1906 as one of only two women working as architects in Georgia and sold her designs through plan books that contractors ordered from directly. The streets are McDonough, Adams and Kings Highway, which is where the initials come from, and the neighbourhood became the first historic district Decatur designated under its own ordinance.
