The University of Colorado's teaching hospital, founded as Colorado General, ran out of room at Ninth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard with Denver built up hard against it. The university took most of the closing Fitzsimons Army post in 1995, broke ground in 1998 and opened an 820,000 square foot hospital here in 2007 at a cost of 644 million dollars. A decommissioned Army base is now where Colorado trains most of its doctors.
