1889
Baltimore, Maryland

A Quaker merchant left his fortune to found a university and hospital together, and they invented the American teaching hospital, residency training, rounds, bedside teaching. Vivien Thomas, a Black lab technician paid as a janitor, worked out the blue baby operation performed here in 1944. Cells taken from Henrietta Lacks in 1951 without her knowledge became the HeLa line.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
