Colonial Village, the first big apartment project the FHA ever insured

Built in four stages between 1935 and 1940, this was the first large-scale affordable housing development to carry Federal Housing Administration insurance. The plan put 245 low brick buildings and about 1,055 apartments around landscaped courtyards rather than along streets. It worked well enough that the FHA held it up as the model, and garden apartment complexes copying it spread across the Washington suburbs.
