The Russell Sage Foundation bought 142 acres beside the Long Island Rail Road in 1909 and hired Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. And Grosvenor Atterbury to lay out a garden suburb inside the city limits. Atterbury cast the houses from precast concrete panels swung into place by crane, one of the first serious attempts at mass-produced housing in America. The curving streets, the brick station plaza and the half-timbering were copied by developers for decades. The homes sold above what working families could pay, which was the one thing the foundation had set out to fix.
